Christ Church football to raise money for Pilgrims Hospice

Canterbury Christ Church University's football society are set to hold a tournament to raise money for Pilgrims Hospice.

The event will take place Wednesday 4 May, at the universities sports facility at Stodmarsh. Sixteen teams will compete in the cup which will raise money for the Kent charity.


Teams include those within the Universities Intramural league and those who compete in the British, Universities & College Sports (BUCS) league. The day is a repeat of last years tournament


The university held the event last year which raised just under £300 got Pilgrims Hospice.


Pilgrims Hospice  is regarded as the leading provider of hospice and specialist palliative care, the care is provided at three main sites in Kent, with the founding site in Canterbury.


The hospice, which has just appointed a new chaplain, is always getting donations from those raising money for them. They are hosting a charity bike ride on the Sunday 8 May to raise money for the hospice.


Discovering Canterbury spoke to captain of C4 rejects Samuel Francis and Joanne Spiteri the youth fundraising coordinator for Pilgrims about the upcoming day.

 





University give promising presenters foot in the door.


Daniel Eycott is one of a group of students who has grabbed the opportunity to broadcast live on radio after his lecturer gave him the chance.

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) has recently seen some of their media students help start up local radio station Academy FM: Folkstone. Mr Eycott, a third year at CCCU has revelled in the opportunity to present live radio shows.

Students hit the airwaves

Students at Canterbury Christ Church university are taking to the airwaves.
Journalism and other media students at the university have been training at new radio station Academy FM in Folkstone.

Christ Church lecturer defends new media

Video games are part of the new era of entertainment, Canterbury lecturer Alan Meades believes they are not as addictive as the media would like everyone to think.

Mr Meades teaches new media theory to students at Canterbury Christ Church University. With an avid interest in games himself he can see the appealing side to them. He said: “I certainly think that they are compelling and designed in a way to seduce the player – but for me addiction has a very different connotation."

Kent climbs up the table

The University of Kent has risen in the university ranking league table to 34th.

The Canterbury based university has jumped four places in the 2012 Complete University Guide. The Guide, which was published at the end of April also shows the university got a top 10 ranking in three different subject areas.

Students learn of upcoming referendum

On 5 May 2011 voting will take place for local elections and city councillors. Voters will also be voting on a referendum concerning the current voting system.
The independent elections watchdog – the Electoral Commission – recently assessed the knowledge of those getting ready to vote. The survey found that most people understood the idea of the voting systems that they were voting about.

Police release CCTV after assault on bus

CCTV images of a man have been release by police in relation to a sexual assault on a 13 year old girl on a bus in Canterbury.
